The top 10 schools which wrote the national senior certificate (NSC) matric exam boasted an average of three distinctions per pupil.
A Business Insider South Africa comparison found that Herschel Girls' School was the country's top performing NSC school based on average distinctions (80% or more for a subject) per pupil.
Our data were cross-referenced with information provided by the career guidance and education site Gradesmatch.
Herschel Girls' School achieved an average of 5.3 distinctions per pupil, followed by Springfield Convent Senior School with an average 4.1 of distinctions per pupil. Both are private schools.
Herschel Girls' School was also the most expensive school on the list with annual tuition of R109,000.
State school Hoer Meisieskool Bloemhof came in third with 3.6 distinctions per pupil and was the cheapest school in the top 10 list, at R30,560 per pupil per annum.
Six of the country's top ten schools were in the Western Cape, and all but one of those in Cape Town, and half the schools on the list were girls only schools.

Schools with fewer than 20 pupils were excluded from the top-performing list.
